It picks up vibrations directly and not with a microphone. This is a great tuner, worth every penny! In short - this is a fantastic product, with only positive features. A friend was using mine and was constantly out of tune with the rest of the band. Tuning my guitars with this unit is fast, easy and very, very accurate.
